“The first thing right off the bat that I really like about this console is the user interface and just the overall workflow. Everything that I need is right there on the home screen in a way that makes sense.”
Brian Tru is talking about the Yamaha DM7 Digital Audio Mixing Console. As part of Church Production’s Road Test User Experience, Tru and his team put the DM7 to work at their church’s Manheim, Pennsylvania broadcast campus and for the church’s summer youth camp. Tru is the broadcast audio coordinator at LCBC Church, which has 24 campuses across the state of Pennsylvania.
...the increased sample rate made a noticeable improvement in their mix.
“So, I really like that it feels like audio engineers designed it for audio engineers and just makes sense and it's very intuitive. Even just sitting down for the first time,” Tru says.
Transitioning from a CL5 console environment, he says the additional outputs were a highlight. “Getting more onboard outputs allowed us to do several different onboard monitor mixes versus on the CL5 where you needed the RIO in order to do those analog outputs. But with the DM7 natively, we got the outputs that we needed so that our musicians and our singers, if they chose to, could utilize the onboard mixes versus a personal monitor mix.”
And he says the increased sample rate made a noticeable improvement in their mix. “One of the things that I loved about transitioning to the DM7 is the ability to mix in 96K versus the 48K on the CL5. And one of the things that my MD told me just the other day, he said that the mix sounds much cleaner and I can only attribute that to what's going on inside of the DM7.”
One of the main concerns Tru had about using the DM7 at the broadcast campus was the fact that a lot of volunteers serve there. He says his fears were unfounded. “All the volunteers love the console,” he says. “They love the two screens versus on the CL5 where you only have the one screen. And they also love the ability to have all the user design keys right on the touch screen as well.”
