The simple truth is that you don’t always have enough camera operators to run a service. Or maybe you have enough for the main sanctuary on the weekend, but not enough for midweek youth ministry, or maybe a quick, two-day conference where you just need a couple of follow cams. Production leaders in those situations should consider the Telycam Vision+ 4KN with the company’s V-Joy camera controller, because we just heard from Worship Center in Lancaster Pennsylvania, and they loved it.
"...you can see details in the shadows and your highlights are not overly blown out—that's signs of a good quality camera and sensor,”” - Ethan Ballantyne, Live Broadcast Director, Worship Center, Lancaster, PA
“To be honest, I had low expectations going into using a PTZ.” That’s Ethan Ballantyne, the live broadcast director at Worship Center. “But honestly, I think I was pleasantly surprised by the quality. Typically, you see a lot of compression on these cameras. These sensors are a lot smaller typically, but I think this camera sensor is up to par. You can expose them. There's not a lot of added noise that's expected with PTZ cameras, [but] when you use a PTZ like this and you can see details in the shadows and your highlights are not overly blown out—that's signs of a good quality camera and sensor,” Ethan said.
The thing about PTZs is that while they can be good, and Ethan was certainly impressed with the Telycam's performance, they’re usually ugly. But that was not the case with the Vision+ 4KN.
“I'm a big fan of matte black production gear, so when [it] came out of the box, [it] looked nice and clean,” Ethan noted. “Just taking a look at the body of the Vision Plus 4K PTZ camera, there are no buttons on it. It's really just your connecting SDI, HDMI, network, and power on the back. So it looked like, okay, everything's going to be built into this controller, and it seemed pretty straightforward to use. The controls are laid out well.”
To Ethan, the Telycam seemed to make a lot of sense for a church that’s short on volunteers but not events. “In a setting where you don't have a lot of volunteers and you need cameras to cut to. I think PTZ’s are fantastic. Having a controller where you're sitting in a control room maybe somewhere really far from the auditorium and you can craft all your shots and cut them, you could almost have one person in that position,” he said.
