Coastal Community Church in Parkland, Florida has a broadcast location and a secondary campus in Lighthouse Point. Audio and lighting engineer Kyle LeForge was looking for a PTZ camera to follow the pastor on stage when their volunteer crew came up short - but he’s been hesitant to buy one. “I've always been a little bit skeptical, especially because not all PTZ cameras are the same. I've seen a lot of really bad ones,” LeForge says.
As part of the Church Production Road Test User Experience, LeForge and his team agreed to test Telycam’s Explore SE PTZ Camera. It offers a 1/1.8-inch Sony sensor, NDI and 12G-SDI connectivity, genlock, 30x zoom and can do 4K at 60 fps. LeForge says he went into the experience with those preconceived notions, but came out of it pleasantly surprised.
“As we brought this into our mix, I had all of those [negative] thoughts, but what was really nice is as we brought it in, I realized that the camera itself has a Sony sensor on board and so it made it really easy to actually integrate with all of our other Sony cameras. It looked very similar and we had to do very little color correction to get it to match what our other cameras were already doing.
They needed a camera that could do 4K60 and something with multiple outputs to send directly over NDI to their TriCaster. They also wanted to be able to record to an SDI recorder at the camera location. LeForge says even with these features, the TelyCam Explore SE was surprisingly simple to use.
“When we first got the Telycam Explore SE and the V-Joy controller, setting up what was actually extremely easy. I have not set up a PTZ camera before and I have not set up a controller to operate it. The moment I did it, I realized how easy it really was,” he explains. “One of the things that we were really excited about with this too is there is a 30X optical zoom, and so we were able to do is actually keep it in focus as it zoomed all the way in and all the way out, and we had an extremely wide shot as well as when we were trying to zoom in and keep it close on pastor, we could keep that and it still looked crisp and genuine.”
