At Hope Community Church in Raleigh, North Carolina, the team is big on using technology to enhance the message of the Gospel in any way possible. Worship is a pretty big production and while they started out podcasting weekend sermons – eventually they decided to have a conversational podcast with Lead Pastor Jason Gore. They started recording in a small film studio with equipment they already had in house. But now they’re in a bigger space with a better look for the two-camera shoot.
As part of Church Production’s Road Test User Experience, Sony sent the church their C-80 condenser mic and MDR-7506 headphones to try out during podcast recordings.
...if you're looking for a rich, clear sound for your podcast studio, this package is for you.
“The microphone is really elegant, and it comes with this nice shock mount. It's nice, it's simple, clean,” says Hope’s Film Director, Rhett Owen. “What I was impressed by once we got it hooked up was actually the richness of the sound without the need for extra gain stages. The sound of it is really nice. It's a very intelligible mic with a very smooth sound. It does have a nice warmth while not being overly sharp or harsh at the top end.”
Owen says some mics that are built specifically for podcasting, you wouldn’t necessarily use them in other applications. But this one is different. “I think this mic has a bonus factor that it's also just a great mic in general. So you could use it in a recording studio, if your church has one of those, or is looking to record music as well. Tthis is a great option that you can use it in the podcasting studio and in a recording studio or even potentially live,” he says.
As for the headphones, Owen has used the MDR-7506’s for a long time – and for good reasons.
“What I love about the Sony MDR-7506 headphones is, one, they're perfect for all kinds of audio mixing, Owen explains. “They've got the level of clarity that I want, as well as not being too colored, so I love the sound quality of them. I also love how light they are and comfortable. Like, you can wear these all day, no problem.”
Owen concludes that if you're looking for a rich, clear sound for your podcast studio, this package is for you. To hear more from Hope Community Church on this test drive of Sony’s C-80 Condenser Microphone and MDR-7506 Stereo Professional Headphones, watch this video.
