Lighting for shared content has become just as important to the church as lighting for a live audience. Bell Shoals Church live streams both Sunday services to YouTube and Facebook and the church’s website, as well as recording content for social media like sermons and Instagram worship clips.
The church located in Brandon, Florida has a large worship facility and the technology to present great live and live-streamed events and a stage worthy of filmed content creation by Lead Filmmaker Tim LaPointe. But with all the lighting they had at their disposal, there was still a dead zone - a place on the stage they had trouble lighting properly.
Church Production Magazine, in cooperation with Elation Professional, recently sent the Bell Shoals Church a set of Elation KL Profile 305W 6,500K RGBMA LED Framing Fixtures. Bell Shoals Production Director Andy Wingate and LaPointe discuss their experience with the new fixture in this video and explain how it allowed them to get the look they wanted on stage that they hadn’t been able to achieve so far.
Marcel Patillo, Creative Videographer at Church of the City in Nashville, Tennessee hosts the discussion with Wingate and LaPointe to find out how they used the fixture and what features they found most productive.
Wingate describes the fixtures’ first impressions as sleek and modern with a good tactile feel. He explains that while the church is blessed with a very large stage – lighting the entire area correctly has been difficult. “In the center of our stage where our choir normally sat, sometimes choir and sometimes a band, there tended to be a black hole there,” Wingate explains. “One thing we had been looking for was how to get a good color wash going on back there for that area.”
LaPointe talks about filming on stage and how they always look for depth and color dynamic they were able to achieve with the KL Profiles. “To be able to have our choir stand behind our worship team and have lights that are on our choir that are different from what’s going on, on the front of the stage, is really important to be able to have some contrast there.”
Wingate and LaPointe agree that a great feature of the Elation KL Profile fixtures is they are highly directional so they can aim color to a specific area rather than have it spilling over to the rest of the stage. Also, the ability to fine tune the color, with control over the lighting to make it look exactly like they want is important to them. Even though Bell Shoals uses the KL to zone in on one area on a large stage, LaPointe says the fixtures could be just as effective in a smaller setting with the wider wash.
