An Elation KL Fresnel 8 FC lighting fixture on the set of a recent video shoot at Metro Atlanta's 12Stone Church.
12Stone Church is a multi-site house of worship with a central location in Metro Atlanta, with seven campuses across the state. Daniel Loggins, one of 12Stone’s three filmmakers, explains that much of the content he shoots is used for promoting the church's various ministries and missions. He also produces films about 12Stone Home -- essentially house churches located in communities across the country where people gather together in their houses and neighborhoods for worship and outreach using content from 12Stone Church.
One of the film team’s most significant projects was a recent multi-camera production that documented the recording of 12Stone’s latest EP music release. The shoot took place in the church’s Lawrenceville auditorium, and was recorded live. “It was a huge collaboration between our production team, our worship team, and our creative team,” Loggins explains.
Recently, Loggins had the opportunity to try out several of Elation’s KL Series LED fixtures, including the KL Fresnel 8 FC and the KL Panel XL. “They’re really bright for LED fixtures and have great color accuracy,” Loggins says. “They were also very intuitive and easy to use.” He adds that the KL Series fixtures can serve well in both live production environments, as well as on film shoots. “For me personally, they’re great in a studio environment. They would work really well on a large, rolling combo stand that I could easily pull out, roll around, and have the lights there, ready to go.”
Elation’s KL Panel XL starts at about $2000 (U.S.), with the KL Fresnel 8 FC starting at approximately $500 (U.S.). Loggins notes that these prices are more than fair, given the fixtures’ performance. “Honestly, I was surprised at the cost––I thought they would be at a higher price point than they are for the amount of output that they deliver, especially being LEDs,” he says. “I was also surprised at just how simple it is to dial in coordinates. They are very easy to figure out; I didn’t even have to look at the manual at first. The user experience is very logical and step-by-step, which I appreciate in a studio environment, where there are so many different variables one has to consider in order to get the production just right.”
The KL Panel XL incorporates a 544W RGBW+Lime+Cyan LED array, delivering soft white or full-color washes of up to 44,000 field lumens at a 100-degree half-peak angle. Its CRI of 95 white color temperature may be adjusted from 2,000 to 10,000K, giving users a vast selection of variable color or white shade projections. The KL Fresnel 8 FC features a 500W RGBMA LED engine, and produces up to 18,000 total fixture lumens and a motorized zoom range of 10 to 50 degrees. Specifically designed for light-critical and noise-sensitive environments, Elation’s KL “Key Light” Series of LED luminaires fulfills the demanding requirements of on-camera productions, from XR to live, and offers a price-to-performance ratio that is hard to beat. Portable yet rugged enough to withstand rough handling on today’s fast-paced sets, they are also ideal key, fill and wash sources.
