If you could only have one camera, this might be the one. The Canon EOS R5 C is just a little bit bigger than a baseball, but it boasts a 45mp full-frame CMOS sensor ready to receive RF or EF lenses (just grab an R Mount adapter), so you can capture all your crisp lowlight footage in 60p 8k raw.
Yes. 60p, 8k.
Raw.
Being able to have that quick of an autofocus ... enables us to provide that excellent experience online that we're looking for.” - KC Mitchell, Production Director, Manna Church
That’s certainly a lot more under the hood than your broadcast camcorder, making the R5 C a particularly tempting choice to take a church livestream to the next level. This photo camera turned video master is so good at its job that even Netflix uses it on their sets. We did not get to talk to Netflix for this test drive, but we did spend some time with KC Mitchell at Manna Church in Colorado Springs while his team took the R5 C for a spin.
“Our church is a portable church. We meet in a high school, and we set up our live experience every Sunday. We try to be as dynamic as possible with it, so we have two, sometimes three mobile cameras, and we've been doing that for five years now,” says KC.
KC found the R5 C to be intuitive, even for his team that was unfamiliar with Canon. “To start using the R5C again from scratch, I found it to be pretty user-friendly, especially for our team members that have never even held a Canon camera before. They were able to scroll through the menu fairly easily, and with the touchscreen, it was really easy for them to navigate menu settings.”
He especially loved the autofocus.
“Our video director at one point commented on the autofocus capabilities of it, being able to focus quickly on faces that you want to be featured. [It was] super sharp and super quick as well. Being able to have that quick of an autofocus on something that you're shooting or somebody that we’re framing up really enables us to provide that excellent experience online that we're looking for.”
Really, though, that’s just the tip of the iceberg for how well the Canon and the R5 C came through for KC and his team. In this video, he lets us in on using the Canon color space as well as a couple of powerful lenses Canon sent that pair perfectly with the R5 C. Take a few minutes with KC and our own Marcel Patillo to learn just exactly what the R5 C can offer church production teams, and you can head here for a full rundown of everything the R5 C has to offer.
