Like kids with a new toy, the student ministry lighting team at New Hope Baptist Church in Duncan, Oklahoma had a blast with their first set of moving lights. As part of Church Production’s Road Test User Experience, ADJ sent the church a set of Focus Flex L19 fixtures to try out and they worked them into their facility for middle and high school students called The Refinery. “When we installed the Focus Flex L19 fixtures, the students who our lighting operators were instantly blown away,” says New Hope’s Media Pastor Brent Hale.
...users have any variation of white needed to either spotlight a subject or just match the other key lighting on stage.
The ADJ Focus Flex L19 moving head gets its name from having 19 independent LED lights users can control to make a lot of unique patterns. It also features a color temperature range from 2,700 all the way up to 10,000, making this a variable white fixture as well, meaning users have any variation of white needed to either spotlight a subject or just match the other key lighting on stage. Hale says his team found it intuitive and easy to get started plugging them into the Jands Vista software they already use to control lights.
“They had the ability to move lights, which was the first time they've ever had the ability to do that. And so, they were having a lot of fun with it, we kind of had to reign them in,” laughs Hale. “Then they really put them through the paces to see what they could do and how they could enhance the worship time without being a distraction or taking away from what's truly happening, which is worshiping.”
The Focus Flex L19 also gave them the ability to fine tune and focus on speakers with a beam that zooms in really tight, or washes the entire stage.
Hale says the fixtures were large but not overweight, so they were easy to move around and install. He says they were super bright and the addition of the lime color really helped them dial in the white to match the rest of their fixtures. “And so, for us, it was just a really awesome fixture, something that we'd never seen before - something that was really new to us, but that offered a lot of new features that we hadn't got to experience yet,” Hale explains.
Compared to their current lighting rig, the Focus Flex L19 also gave them the ability to fine-tune and focus on speakers with a beam that zooms in really tight or washes the entire stage. They were now able focus in on the youth pastor, on worship leaders or even focus on musical instruments. If a keyboard had a solo or the drummer needed to have some light, Hale says they could focus those lights in as well.
“The Focus Flex L19 fixtures allowed us flexibility that we never had before. And for us, that was a real aha moment because we're like, man, okay, this is what we're missing,” he concludes. “These fixtures were a great addition for us that’s not going to break the bank, and we can add a couple in without hurting us too much, but still do all the things that newer more expensive lights could do.”
