Worship at Transformation Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma is highly dynamic. It’s high energy in a 4,000-seat arena. The facility used to be a D-league basketball arena and they’ve done a lot of work to make it acoustically and architecturally sound.
As far as technology goes, Transformation Church is top of the line. They even stream Sunday services in 4K HDR!
As part of Church Production’s Road Test/User Experience, DPA sent the church several of their 2017 Shotgun Mics and asked the church’s production director Keithan Carroll to run them through their paces and give them a full audition.
Right out of the box, Carroll says he noticed the look and feel of these mics. “I loved just how clean and compact they were,” he says. “The black matt finish, as production guy, you love everything in black --- even at the bottom where you plug in the connector. They made it very easy to handle. But the base of it was rugged, and so I loved the way that looked and the way that felt in my hands.”
Carroll used the DPA 2017 in a couple of locations like video studio spaces and in their lobby doing video shoots. They also used it in the main arena as an audience mic, just to compare and see how it compared with some of the other mics they were using at the time.
“The thing that I was surprised about when listened to the recordings..., was the off-access rejection. It was great, especially in some of the rooms where there were a lot of hard surfaces like bouncing --- and then the low shelf noise. That was surprising,” he says. “Some other models, you have dip switches and you have other switches that can help with some things, but for this to be right out of the box and you just plug it in and you go, it helped us.”
He thought it would also be easy for volunteers to use and help them get better audio. “When we go on film shoots or giving it out to our films department that might not be as versed in audio, that we know what they're going to get and they don't have to figure out, ‘Is it this? Am I attenuating? Am I boosting this on the actual microphone?’ It's just plug it in, position it and go.”
