So Christmas is finally over. Christmastime for me is always a blur. We plan and prepare for it for so long, and then in a blink of an eye, it is over. I am sure that you have worked hard, put in extra hours, and did whatever it took to make your Christmas celebration a success. Music was played, lights shone brightly, and productions were choreographed. And now, after all of that, we feel tired.
I used to feel like Christmas was for everyone else, but not for people in ministry. For us, it is “all hands on deck.” In the end we can feel like Christmas has just passed us by. It is interesting how we can be a participant in the most wonderful time of the year but end up feeling worn out and jaded. I think Jesus' words in Matthew ring especially true for us this time of year.
Matthew 11:28 Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.
Are you weary? Have you been carrying heavy burdens? Are you starting to feel the tinge of burn out? That King, who's birthday we celebrate, is no longer laying in a manger. He is alive and powerful and is offering you rest. He is offering rest from your weariness and rest from your burdens.
Christmas is the perfect time of year for tech directors to act this out what this verse says. At no other time is it more applicable the now. The game day is over. You've won! You've done your job, new people came into the kingdom of God. We won! You carried some heavy burdens but now is the time to come to Jesus and get the rest that He has promised to you.
For church techs, Christmas is one of the most important times of the year. It's when everything comes together. It's the culmination of all we've been working towards all year long. This is the time that many people come and hear the Good News for the very first time, and we get to play a part of that.
But along with that comes a certain degree of weariness. But now… It's time for us to rest. It's time for us to reflect back on all that God has done over these past few days and worship Him for who He is. Now we can bring our fatigue to Him and ask Him for the rest that He so generously gives to us.
Now that the stage lights have been dimmed, the music has faded and the people have gone home, take some time to just sit and be quiet. Reflect on this miracle of eternal life that was given to us through a simple act of love. Ponder that even though the birth of Jesus was over two thousand years ago, you were chosen to help lead others in celebrating this momentous occasion.
Although you may be tired and weary, come to Jesus. He offers peace and rest. And for that we can rejoice in the life that He gives.
I love these lines in O Holy Night that says, “A thrill of hope the weary soul rejoices. For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn!”
Now is the time to let our weary souls rejoice. There is a new and glorious morning waiting for you. There is hope for another day because our God sent His only Son to this earth to be born in a humble way and offers use freedom from our sins. So let us rejoice!
