Whiteley Solutions is an acoustic design company that has created a line of high-end drum enclosures specifically designed for church use. Their product line of Phoenix full drum enclosures provide up to 39 dB of reduction on the stage. This helps vocalists and other musicians on stage to hear themselves better. It also allows the FOH engineer to mix drums with studio-like separation. What audio engineer wouldn't mind having that?
It also allows the FOH engineer to mix drums with studio-like separation.
There are currently four different models to choose from. The new LX (List: $25,995.00) is now the flagship model, and has the product line's signature curved plexiglass front, cable pass through, air exchange to keep the drummer cool, and a carpeted raised deck. The ceiling and the back wall of the enclosure are made with acoustically absorbent material and there are three microphone mounts built into the ceiling, eliminating the need for overhead microphone stands. Custom options include lighting bars to illuminate the drummer, and a multi-pin, quick-connect snake. The three other models: the best-selling Curve, Lite and Slim have fewer bells and whistles, but offer more affordable pricing ($1,950.00-$6,495.00).
I've been able to mix a full band using an earlier version Phoenix drum shield a few times --- once at Gateway Church in Dallas, Tex. and once more at Church of the Highlands in Biringham, Ala. Both times I was really happy with the outcome. These are professional-grade products that provide real solutions for reducing (in fact nearly eliminating) the stage noise that occurs with acoustic drums. Whiteley Solutions is a company that is leading the pack and setting the standard here. I'll be putting the Phoenix Curve through its paces in the near future and provide more details on the other models and options, so stay tuned. Look for a full-length product review coming this Fall.
