While churches are not generally known as early adopters of technology, in the case of LED lighting they are bucking the trend. Huge demand from churches for the energy efficiency and color changing flexibility of LED lighting has rapidly driven down the price and increased product quality. Of course, larger churches were among the first to recognize the benefits of this new generation of lighting fixtures; technology and product innovation have quickly made these creative tools affordable for smaller churches, including in portable applications.
We recently surveyed major lighting manufacturers to ask which of their new products were most appropriate for small and portable churches. The following products are applicable and, in some cases, are designed for smaller church applications, including for portable churches.
1. ADJ WiFly EXR Hex Par
The WiFly EXR Hex Par is a battery-powered, wireless DMX LED Par with five10-watt RGBWA+UV Hex LEDs (red, green, blue, white, amber, and UV) designed to create rich hues and smooth color mixing for stage and wall washing or uplighting. No power cords or DMX cables are needed, the company reports.
2. Altman Phoenix LED
The Altman Lighting Phoenix LED is a 250-watt, LED-sourced profile spot fixture designed to replace your standard 750-watt incandescent source with no bench focusing required. The Phoenix LED profile spot is available in 3,000k white, RGBA, RGBW and 5,600k white array options for maximum design flexibility.
3. Arri L10 Fresnel
The L10 is the newest and largest fixture in Arri's L-Series family of LED Fresnels (L-Series family is pictured below). Arri says the 400-watt L10 is one of the most powerful LED Fresnels on the market, and is designed for designed for film, broadcast, theater and live entertainment. The L10 is fully color tunable, with the ability to adjust the color temperature from 2,800-10,000 K.
4. Blizzard Colorise EXA LED Par
Designed for sound-sensitive environments, the new Blizzard Colorise EXA LED Par offers a highly efficient, natural convection design. Featuring 12 15-watt, high-output, 6-in-1 RGBAW+UV LEDs and a 25-degree beam angle, the Colorise EXA includes a built-in AnyFi wireless DMX receiver, which can support both 2.4 GHz and W-DMX wireless DMX signal types.
5. Chauvet Professional Ovation Min-E-10WW Ellipsoidal
Designed for tight spaces, the Ovation Min-E-10WW from Chauvet Professional is a 10-watt ellipsoidal LED fixture with a four-blade shutter system. With a 3,053K color temperature, the unit produces a hard-edged beam that is also designed for gobo projection. It comes with interchangeable lens tubes: a 19-degree tube for a tightly focused beam; and a wider 36-degree tube.
6. Elation Professional Colour 5 Profile
An ellipsoidal spot fixture, the Colour 5 Profile is designed to deliver an exceptionally flat field of light with a Color Rendering Index (CRI) of over 94 for more faithful color reproduction. The luminaire supports multiple interchangeable lens options—19-, 26-, 36- and 50-degrees, each sold separately. Manual focus and a four-blade framing system allow for full control of the beam shape for more precise illumination with less light spill.
7. Elektralite ElektraBar Mini 12W RGBWAI LED Linear Strip
The Elektralite ElektraBar Mini features individual control of each pixel, producing 16 million colors on eight different LED pixels. With precision spacing, the fixture can also produce low-resolution pixel mapping and video wall applications using the unit's eight powerful 12-watt, six-in-one LEDs, consisting of a red, green, blue, white, amber, and indigo component.
8. ETC ColorSource Par
Designed to bring a new level of quality to budget-conscious environments, the ColorSource Par offers a proportionate deployment of red, green, blue, a twist of lime and an extra dash of red. ETC says the lime and double-red emitters expand the ColorSource PAR's color range. They're also tested for color uniformity to match other LED fixtures from ETC.
9. Lightronics FXLD1018FRP5I LED Lighting Fixture
Comprised of 18 10-watt LEDs, the 200-watt FXLD1018FRP5I LED fixture is compatible with HD video applications and is designed to offer flicker-free operation of greater than 400 Hz. The five-in-one LEDs each include red, green, blue, amber and white colors. It comes with a 45-degree lens (25 degree optional), PowerCon in/out, three- or five-pin XLR connectors, five- or nine-channel operation, and double yoke design for floor stand or truss-mounting.
10. Martin Rush MH 6 Wash Light
Harman Professional Solutions' Martin Rush MH 6 Wash moving head features a fully pre-mixed color system of 12 10-watt RGBW (red, green, blue, white) LEDs with a 10-degree to 60-degree zoom. It also features full electronic dimming, strobe effects and temperature-controlled fan cooling for quiet operation.
11. Osram Sylvania Kreios Profile LED Fixture
Created especially for smaller stages, the Kreios Fresnel and Kreios Profile LED fixtures are available with all white or red, green, blue, and white LEDs. They are designed for flicker-free operation and exceptional luminosity in a small, efficient package, according to the company. The multifunctional Kreios Profile features a dual-optic condenser lens allowing for precision focus and four adjustable shutters.
12. Zylight F8-100 LED Fresnel
Available in daylight (5,600K) or tungsten (3,200K) versions, the F8-100 LED Fresnel produces nearly as much light output as a traditional 1,000-watt Fresnel, but only draws 90 watts and can be powered by a standard 14.4-volt camera battery or AC adapter. Featuring quantum dot technology, the fixture is designed to provide a more refined and balanced natural light output and delivers a high CRI as well as a high Television Lighting Consistency Index (TLCI).
13. Philips Strand PLProfile1 MKII LED Luminaire
This variable beam profile fixture from Philips Strand offers an innovative combination of LED source technology and precision optical design. The compact, robust fixture is designed to deliver seamless fading between colors, providing designers a new level of creativity with less power consumption and no dimmer circuits.
14. Robe ParFect Fixture
The ParFect is an affordable LED source ACL beam (par) made in Europe by Robe Lighting. The unit is a static version of the company's LEDBeam 100 and retains all the key features, including both CMY and RGBW color control, Tungsten emulation, zone effects, selectable and variable color temperatures, and a powerful, punchy, seven-degree beam. Wireless DMX, clip-on diffusion filters and detachable barn doors are available as additional cost options.
