Why are church technology servants so special? Is it because we serve our churches in ways others can't or won't? Is it the unique combination of science and art that we employ? Is it because no one knows we are there until something goes wrong?
Church tech people should not feel special because of what we do, but because of who we are as part of the body of Christ (V3). In fact, it is our job as church tech folks to bring about the same kind of body-wide unity and function as we find in our physical bodies. The heart, brain and lungs, which are vital to the function of our physical bodies, essentially serve the other parts by supplying them with the blood, oxygen, and direction they need to corporately be the body. Each part has a function that supports the whole (Vs 4-5).
The passage below can be directly applied to the way we serve in our technical ministries. We have a Godly reason to pursue excellence (leading with diligence, V 8); to adopt the attitude Christ has modeled for us as the ultimate servant (Vs 3, 7, Philippians 2); to take on the spirit of cheerfulness and encouragement that is to permeate our service (V 8); and to rely upon one another as the many parts of the body of Christ (V 5). These passages equally apply to volunteers, as well as those who lead those volunteers, create vision, and make decisions In a new series of ongoing devotions for church technical people, to be published both online and in print, we will study the Scriptures together; meditate on their meaning and apply them to who we are both as Christians and men and women who serve the Church in the area of technology.
