Action Church, Winter Park, FL
Exponential growth in church multisite expansion means repeated business for designers and consultants. Florida's Action Church is another prime example.
Action Church opened its doors in Winter Springs, Fla., four years ago and quickly started to grow and expand. A second location followed in Oviedo two years later, a third opened in Sanford in 2017, and just this year, Winter Park became its fourth chapter.
Project snapshot
The Winter Park building was built to serve as the central Florida ministry’s new broadcast location. The main sermon happens at the new facility each week, with a live feed broadcast to Action Church’s three other locations--two portable sites and a smaller venue.
Bradenton, Fla.-based AVL integrator Crown Design Group (CDG) was brought on to install the Winter Park location’s new lighting and sound systems, working closely with the church’s music director, John Williams.
CDG designed the lighting system for Action Church's Winter Park location around Elation Professional intelligent lighting products.
Action Church first met with CDG almost two years ago to talk over its wants and needs to deliver the church's broadcast in the best way possible.
Action Church first met with CDG almost two years ago to talk over its wants and needs to deliver the church's broadcast in the best way possible. Ben Graham, CDG’s co-founder, was in charge of the multi-church project and handled design, integration and installation of the house and environmental lighting throughout the building, as well as installing an LED wall.
“Every Action Church location has live music and a pastor host but this is their first large, non-mobile location,” Graham says. “They required a versatile system that could cover both house and stage lighting and because all locations take a live feed from the Winter Park site, they needed lighting that could easily transition for use in the sermon broadcast.”

For sound, the company installed Allen & Heath’s dLive systems, chosen for their versatility, sonic quality and budget-friendly price point, Williams notes.
The comprehensive AVL solution was completed in fall 2018, with the first services held in early November 2018.
Lighting the house & stage
One of the needs of the 1,000-seat church was a versatile color-changing house lighting solution for its main room. So CDG installed Elation Professional’s LED downlighting Colour Pendant to allow the control of the house lighting to match the color onstage. They could also shade the room and provide color to the audience from out on stage. CDG also installed Colour Pendant fixtures in the church lobby to greet attendees as they enter the building.
To create color wash on stage, CDG utilized Elation’s Fuze Wash Z350 LED wash moving head, a single source PAR luminaire with zoom, along with SixPar 200 LED Par lights that allow for a wide range of color shades. In addition, SixPar 100 units were used in the children's ministry, Graham reports.
CDG also installed Pixel Bar LED strip lights, which are pixel-controllable bars utilized for background decorative effects that add visual interest on camera. These are lined vertically under the LED screens and risers.
Cuepix Blinder WW4s are also in use at the new Winter Park site. The manufacturer reports that the fixtures are LED-based white light units that give the classic look of a 4-lite blinder at a fraction of the power requirements, lending themselves to low-end color temperature looks and audience lighting.
Action Church’s new lighting system is now serving multiple weekend services broadcast out across the Orlando area. The church's worship space is also now a sought-after venue for musical performances and other community events.
